Messier. Messier considered M84 and all the other objects identified by the designation ΓÇ£MΓÇ¥ unwanted distractions. His real goal was to discover comets. Messier catalogued and fixed the location of over 100 blurry objects that appeared in his small telescope, so other comet hunters would not mistake them for comets. Many of the objects were galaxies like M84, now generally considered far more interesting than the comets Messier so assiduously sought.
